Cradles, drain stave, three piece walls, forty eight staves, bands, benches, heater, shingles. Every part name and every warning below is lifted from the assembly manual, and the whole sequence is written out in our barrel sauna assembly instructions.

The sticker is never the number you spend. The pad, the dedicated circuit and the first coat of treatment are separate on every kit sold, and together they add fifteen to twenty five percent before you have sat in it once.

Three line items
nobody budgets

None of these appear on a kit page, and the second one is the reason crates sit on driveways for a month. The full arithmetic is on how much does an outdoor sauna cost, and the wiring spec is on sauna electrical requirements.

$0 to $1,800 Foundation

An existing deck is free once an engineer confirms the load. Gravel and pavers run about $350 in materials. A four inch reinforced pad is $1,200 to $1,800 with a contractor.

$800 to $2,500 The 240V circuit

Never included. Driven almost entirely by trench length and panel headroom. Get it quoted before you order. A wood burning heater removes it completely.

$80 to $220 Exterior treatment, per coat

Water based stain and seal, outside surfaces only. Hemlock wants it every 12 to 18 months. Redwood are clear that the interior stays untreated or it fumes.

FAQ

01Can two people build a barrel sauna in a weekend?+
Yes, assuming the pad is already done. Budget eight to ten hours of assembly plus a separate visit from the electrician. The manual expects two people from the wall stage onward, and the end walls genuinely need both.
02What does the electrical actually cost?+
The kit price never includes it. A dedicated 240V circuit to a backyard location typically runs $800 to $2,500 depending on trench length and panel capacity. Manufacturers require a licensed electrician, copper wire with 90C insulation, and no aluminium. Whether it needs a permit is covered on do i need a permit for a sauna.
03Why does the temperature sensor height matter so much?+
Place it too high or too low and the heater's internal safety switch cuts in before the sixty minute preheat finishes, so the room never reaches temperature. Redwood also warn it shortens the life of the heater coils. Roughly fourteen inches to the side of the heater is the target. Work out the unit itself with what size sauna heater do i need.
04Is a barrel sauna watertight without the roof?+
No, and the manufacturer says so directly. Interlocking staves do not form a watertight seal, so without shingles water comes through the boards. Some seepage in blowing rain is normal even with the roof on. Run the heater for an hour after heavy rain to dry the room.
05Hemlock, cedar or thermowood?+
Hemlock ships standard and is perfectly serviceable, but wants exterior sealing every twelve to eighteen months. Clear red cedar costs roughly $1,200 more and buys natural rot resistance, no knots, and a surface that stays cooler against skin at 180F. Thermowood is the most weather tolerant and the darkest.
