Why the kit price varies so much
Two barrels of identical size can be $2,000 apart, and it is almost never the size doing it. Wood grade is the biggest lever. Clear cedar with no knots costs roughly 40 percent more than knotty cedar and about double thermally modified poplar. Knots are not only cosmetic. They bleed resin at temperature and they are the first place a stave splits.
The second lever is the heater. A kit quoted with a generic 6 kW unit and a kit quoted with a Harvia or Huum are not the same purchase, and swapping up later costs more than paying the difference now. The three costs nobody budgets
1. The pad
Cradles sit on a flat, level base. Not roughly level. Level within about an eighth of an inch across both cradles, or the staves will not close and the bands will not pull true. Gravel and pavers done properly costs a few hundred dollars and a weekend. A poured slab costs more and is the right call if you are ever moving up to a cabin.
2. The circuit
An 8 kW electric heater on 240 volts wants a dedicated 40 amp circuit. That is a licensed electrician, a permit, and a trench or a conduit run to wherever the sauna sits. Twenty feet from the panel is cheap. A hundred and fifty feet across a finished lawn is not. Get this quoted before you order the kit, because it is the single line most likely to blow the budget. 3. Freight and the last thirty feet
Kits ship as a pallet on a lift gate truck, and most quotes are curbside. Somebody has to move roughly 1,200 pounds of lumber from the curb to the pad. That is two people, a hand truck and an afternoon, or a couple hundred dollars for help.
