Best Outdoor Sauna Kits (2026): What the Manuals Actually Say

Updated September 2026 · Based on the manufacturers’ own assembly manuals

Most “best sauna kit” pages are a list of product photos with the specs copied off the shop page. That tells you nothing about the thing that actually decides whether you enjoy the purchase: what happens on the weekend the pallet arrives.

This guide is built the other way round. We read the assembly manuals, counted the parts, and worked out what a kit really asks of you: how many people, how many hours, and which steps go wrong. Then we looked at the price. If you want the pure arithmetic first, start with our guide, How Much Does an Outdoor Sauna Cost?

Barrel or cabin?

This is the only decision that really matters, and it is not about looks. We cover it in full on barrel sauna vs cabin sauna, but here is the compressed version.

A barrel is a cylinder lying on its side. Heat rises into the curve instead of collecting in cold corners, so it comes up to temperature faster and uses a smaller heater than a cabin of the same volume. It also assembles from pre cut staves that drop into two cradles with no framing, no insulation and no vapour barrier. That is why it is the standard first sauna.

A cabin gives you square footage you can actually use: a bench you can lie flat on, headroom to stand, a door that is not at the end of a tube. It costs more, takes longer, and is a genuine construction project.

If this is your first sauna and you are building it yourself, buy a barrel.

What assembly actually involves

The manual for a Classic 6 Person Barrel runs to 20 steps. Here is the honest shape of it, and the whole sequence is written out on our page of barrel sauna assembly instructions.

The step people get wrong: cutting the cord that holds the door before the front wall is seated in its dado groove. The manual says leave it wrapped. Leave it wrapped.

What to check before you buy

Wood

Clear cedar is the benchmark: stable, aromatic, and it weathers to silver rather than rotting. Thermally modified poplar and hemlock are cheaper and perfectly good. Knotty grades cost less and bleed resin at temperature. Ask which grade, not just which species.

Heater sizing

Undersized heaters are the most common regret. A 6 person barrel wants roughly 8 kW electric, and 8 kW usually means a 240 V 40 A circuit, an electrician, a permit in most places, and a cost that is not in the kit price. Before you order, work it out properly in our guide, What Size Sauna Heater Do I Need?

What the price does not include

A $6,500 kit is realistically $8,000 to $9,000 in the ground.

The two brands worth your time

Sauna Kit Company covers the widest range of sizes, ships clear cedar with Harvia heaters, and prices sharper than most of the field. It is the one we point most first time buyers at.

Redwood Outdoors writes the best manual in the category and offers the panorama glass end wall that sells most of these saunas on looks alone. Our full redwood outdoors sauna review covers where the price lands once it is running.

Is a kit worth it over a pre built?

A pre built sauna delivered on a trailer costs roughly 40 to 60 percent more than the same sauna as a kit. You are paying for two days of your own labour. If those two days are worth more to you than a few thousand dollars, buy assembled. Most people building their first backyard sauna find the build is half the point.

Frequently asked

How long does an outdoor sauna last?

A cedar barrel on a proper base, oiled every couple of years, is a 15 to 25 year object. Barrels outlive cabins in wet climates because water runs off a curve instead of sitting on a flat roof seam.

Do I need a permit?

For the structure, usually not. Most barrels fall under the shed threshold. For the electrical, almost always yes. We go through it in our guide, Do I Need a Permit for a Sauna?

Can one person build it?

Not safely. The end walls and the roof both need a second pair of hands.
