The formula
Start with the internal volume of the room in cubic feet. The rule of thumb across every major manufacturer is 1 kW per 45 to 50 cubic feet for an insulated indoor room. Then add for anything that bleeds heat.
- Glass: add the equivalent of 45 cubic feet for every square foot of glass beyond a small vision panel. A panorama end wall can add 2 kW on its own.
- Uninsulated or outdoor: add 20 to 30 percent in a cold climate.
- Stone or tile surfaces: add the equivalent of 100 cubic feet per square foot. They are heat sinks.

The circuit is the real cost
An 8 kW heater is not a plug in appliance. It wants a dedicated 240 volt, 40 amp circuit, run in conduit or buried cable to wherever the sauna sits, terminated at a listed disconnect. That means a licensed electrician and, in almost every jurisdiction, a permit. Get the quote before you order. If the run is brutal, a wood fired heater stops being a romantic choice and starts being the cheap one.
Electric, wood or infrared
Electric is the default. Thirty minutes to temperature, a thermostat, a timer, and nothing to carry. It costs you the circuit.
Wood fired needs no circuit at all, which can save thousands, and it produces a softer heat most traditionalists prefer. In exchange you buy a chimney kit, honour the clearances, keep dry wood, and light it 45 minutes ahead.
Infrared is a different product wearing the same name. It heats your body rather than the air, runs at 120 to 150 degrees, and cannot take water on rocks. If you want steam, it is not a sauna in the sense you mean.
Stones matter more than people expect
A heater with 100 pounds of stone holds heat and gives a long soft steam when you pour. The same kW with 25 pounds spikes and dies. Is a bigger heater always safer?

Where does the sensor go?
